A Message to the Lewisburg Community
Dear LASD Students, Families, and Community,
The recent death of George Floyd while in police custody, and the subsequent protests and riots have caused many feelings for our students, families, community, and nation. Anger, fear, and confusion are just a few of the emotions felt and expressed. Our children are looking to us, their parents, school, and community leaders, for answers and reassurance. We must first confront the reality and acknowledge the existence of racial bias and discrimination in daily life. Our Black and other marginalized students are all too aware of this reality. This is an everyday presence for them, not just when tragedies make national news. They live with this knowledge in their everyday interactions with others. Many of our white students also have seen how this affects their friends, classmates, and teammates of color.
LASD is an educational institution that condemns racism in all its forms. The Lewisburg Area School District Board of Directors condemns racism. We recognize that we must do better and we are committed to that effort. Although our school year has concluded, our support and care for our students has not. Please know you can reach out to teachers, counselors, principals and administration. While we offer these words of assurance and support, we recognize that our actions going forward must speak to our sincere promise to be better.
Our district adopted a new strategic plan, Excellence and Equity, in August, 2019 that includes training for our teachers and staff to better understand and address issues of diversity and race. The strategic plan also commits us to work to provide opportunities for our students and their families to engage in culturally and ideologically different experiences. Our plan will take time to implement but we will persist in our efforts to achieve the goals in the strategic plan, and in doing so make our world a better place for our students, families, and community members.
