School Director Vacancy

The Lewisburg Area Board of School Directors invites individuals to submit an application to fill the vacancy on the school board. 

Applications must be submitted to Paula Young, Assistant Board Secretary either online, email, postal service, or in person to 1951 Washington Avenue, Lewisburg, PA 17837. The deadline for application is NO LATER THAN 12:00 NOON on Tuesday, August 20, 2024.

Applicants must be available to participate in the interviews in person at 7:00PM on Thursday, August 22, 2024. The appointment will be made at the board meeting that evening. 

Pennsylvania Eligibility Requirements

  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Be a citizen of the United States.
  • Be a resident of Lewisburg Area School District for at least one year prior to taking office.
  • Be of good moral character.
  • May not have been convicted of a felony or certain misdemeanors.
  • Cannot hold an incompatible office, such as mayor, county, or municipal official, etc. as defined in Section 322 of the School Code.

What School Boards Do

  • The key work of school boards is to ensure student achievement.
  • Hire and annually evaluate a superintendent who is responsible for the day-to-day
    operation of the school district.
  • Adopt an annual budget that is developed in collaboration with the administration
    to allocate funds for the district’s priorities and operations.
  • Adopt policies that provide guidance for the operations of the school district that
    assure compliance with Federal and State laws and reasonable rules and regulations for school functions.
  • Approve planned instruction developed by the staff that sets what is taught.
  • Provide and maintain school facilities.
  • Spend an average of 20 hours per month on the work of the board including
    executive sessions, board meetings, special sessions (when called), committee work, retreats, and professional development, attendance at graduation and other special events.
  • Abide by the Principles for Governance & Leadership.

What School Boards Do Not Do:

  • Evaluate any staff members other than the superintendent.
  • Work directly with students, we work on behalf of students.
  • Determine how the curriculum is taught, that is the purview of the professional staff.
  • Participate in interviews or decisions about the hiring of individual teachers,
    support staff, or coaches.
