Dear Parent, Guardian, or Community Member,
I would like to take a minute to thank each of you for your understanding and patience as the unsettling situation surrounding COVID-19 unfolds. We join you in feeling great concern for our students and our community and understand there will be many questions.
My purpose in writing is to assure each of you that our number one priority, as always, is the safety, health, and well-being of our students, staff, and community. Prior to Governor Wolfs announcement Friday, the district had anticipated the possibility of the schools closing and had already begun the complex process of planning for such an event. But, even as I write this on Sunday afternoon, the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) has put out new information and guidance. Given the fluid nature of the situation and information we are receiving, I will personally ensure timely communication with district families as matters continue to develop.
To that end, I have understandably heard some frustration with the time the District notified parents regarding the closing of schools on Friday and how it was done. I want to make everyone aware that school districts were not given a prior notification of the Governor’s announcement to close schools prior to him making it. I regret that information was out on Facebook, or other social media, before the I was able communicate the announcement.
The announcement went out via school messenger and, knowing that not every parent has an email address, a phone message was also put out. Here is where I could use your help. Please, if you have not signed up to be part of school messenger please do so. If you have, please make sure your email address is correct. Also, please provide a correct phone number at which you can be reached. And, ifl could, please provide a number at you can be reliably reached regardless the time of day. For those that have provided only a work number, messages such as this most recent one that was sent near or after the work day weren’t received in a timely manner. Information regarding school messenger is available on the District website at https://www.lasd.us/school-messenger/.
Just in today’s communication from PDE we have received different and additional information whether it is required to provide instruction during this current school closure and how we might provide meals/food to students that qualify for free or reduced-price lunches. More specific information will be presented by the end of the day Tuesday. If you are asking yourself, “Why not Monday?”, please understand these are not simple decisions to make as they involve not just students and parents, but our employees and the coordination and cooperation of district partners such as the PSA and Green Dragon Foundation as well.
We have closed the buildings tomorrow, but students will be able to get any personal belongings beginning Tuesday morning at 8:00 am. School offices will open from 8:00 am until their regular dismissal times and the Central offices will be open from 8:00 am – 4:00 pm. We know that Lewisburg is a strong community of caring and supportive families, and we trust we will weather this difficult time together.
