January/February 2024
We are moving our 2023-2024 academic year into our second semester, and winter weather will likely continue to play a role in our planning for school programming. Unlike some districts, we have not placed reliance upon virtual education for traditional “snow days” in our school calendar or daily operations. Our school calendar reflects traditional “snow days” and make-up days should we not be in session due to weather. This has afforded families the opportunity to enjoy the break in routine a snow day may provide.
We have the option to design and deliver up to five school calendar days by using FID (Flexible Instruction Days), and our team of administrators have been working to expand our instructional delivery model to include using virtual education on future “snow days” that may occur in the balance of this school year. While FID days are not without challenges, I also know our traditional practice of extending school days further into June or “taking back” promised spring vacation days has practical drawbacks for all involved.
Our information and procedures regarding using limited virtual instruction for inclement weather as it may occur in February and early March are now outlined and shared with all students, families, and staff. I ask that you work with us in this endeavor to continue the continuity of our instruction through the careful use of virtual instruction afforded in using one or more flexible instruction days. Our experiences this year will also inform our continued consideration of this model of teaching and learning in future school years.
January/February is also the time in a school year when we earnestly work in preparation of our plans for facility improvements and the operating budget for the coming 2024-2025 school year. The Board and our leadership team have been working diligently to give attention toward enhancements and timely maintenance of our buildings and grounds, while also serving as fiscal stewards of the community’s financial resources. This body of work is important, and I can offer assurances of careful consideration of any proposed capital fund projects and our budgeting processes. We are posting relevant materials on BoardDocs, which is publicly accessible. We also are posting information on our main page of the District website for general community awareness. We will be discussing facilities and finances in an upcoming work session following our
In closing, it is the daily good work of our professional educators and support staff, and our community engagement and public trust that empowers us to meet our espoused vision: “the pursuit of equity and excellence.” (current strategic plan) I can think of no greater purpose.
